CategoriesTechnology & Computing

SDRAM stands for Synchronous dynamic random-access memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.

DRAM that synchronizes its operations with the system clock, letting the memory controller pipeline requests efficiently. All modern DDR memory is a form of SDRAM.

Example: The 1999 PC came with 128 MB of PC100 SDRAM.

Usage notes

SDRAM became standard in PCs in the late 1990s, replacing asynchronous EDO memory; speed grades such as PC100 and PC133 indicated the bus frequency in megahertz. The original single-data-rate type is now called SDR SDRAM to distinguish it from DDR SDRAM, which transfers data twice per clock cycle. Spec sheets usually drop the prefix and just say DDR4 or DDR5.
