scRNA-seq stands for Single-cell RNA sequencing, a genetics abbreviation.
Technique that measures gene expression in thousands to millions of individual cells, rather than averaging across a tissue. It reveals distinct cell types and states, including rare cells, and maps how cells change during development and disease.
Example: scRNA-seq of the tumor identified a small population of drug-resistant cells.
Usage notes
The first single-cell transcriptome was published in 2009, and droplet-based methods introduced in 2015 made large studies routine. The Human Cell Atlas consortium aims to map every cell type in the human body. Data are usually visualized in two-dimensional plots that cluster similar cells together.
