RPS stands for Renewable portfolio standard, an energy abbreviation.
State policy requiring electricity suppliers to obtain a minimum share of their power from renewable sources by set dates, typically verified with renewable energy certificates. About 30 US states and Washington, D.C., have mandatory standards.
Example: The state's RPS requires 50% renewable electricity by 2030.
Usage notes
Iowa adopted the first renewable portfolio standard in 1983. Hawaii and California have set targets of 100% renewable or clean electricity by 2045. Many states have converted their RPS into a broader clean energy standard that also counts nuclear power. Outside the United States similar policies are called renewable obligations or quotas.
