1. Random number generator

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations · also used in technology and entertainment

Randomness in a game, such as loot drops, critical hits or spawn locations, determined by a random number generator. Players blame "bad RNG" or praise "good RNG."

Example: Spent four hours farming the boss and RNG still won't drop the sword.

Technically, computers use pseudo-random number generators. Speedrunners speak of "RNG manipulation" to influence outcomes. Common in all genres, and "RNGesus" is a joking deity players pray to for good luck.

2. Renewable natural gas

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Pipeline-quality methane produced by upgrading biogas from landfills, dairy farm manure digesters, wastewater plants and food waste. RNG is chemically interchangeable with fossil natural gas and can be injected into pipelines or used as vehicle fuel.

Example: The dairy's digester sells RNG to a fleet of trucks under California's low carbon fuel program.

In Europe the same product is usually called biomethane. Capturing methane that would otherwise escape gives some RNG pathways very low or even negative carbon intensity scores. Supply is limited relative to total gas demand, so it is not a full substitute for fossil gas.
