ROY stands for Rookie of the Year, a basketball abbreviation.
Award for the best first-year player in a league. The NBA's version, named the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy since 2022-23, is voted by media members; MLB gives the Jackie Robinson Award in each league, and the NHL presents the Calder Trophy.
Example: Victor Wembanyama was a unanimous NBA ROY in 2024.
Usage notes
Wilt Chamberlain (1960) and Wes Unseld (1969) won ROY and MVP in the same NBA season. Baseball's award was renamed for Jackie Robinson, the first winner in 1947, in 1987. The NFL splits it into Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year.
