1. Point guard
Sports · Basketball Abbreviations
Primary ball handler who brings the ball up the court, runs the offense and sets up teammates, usually the shortest player in the lineup. Point guards lead their teams in assists and are expected to read defenses and call plays.
Example: The Knicks' PG handed out 14 assists without a single turnover.
Coaches number the positions, and the point guard is the "1". Magic Johnson, who stood 6 feet 9, showed that the role depends on skill rather than size. A "pass-first" point guard looks to set up others, while a "score-first" or combo guard looks for his own shot.
2. Parental Guidance Suggested
Arts & Entertainment · Film, Television and Theater Abbreviations
MPA film rating indicating that some material may not be suitable for children and parents should decide whether to let them watch. There is no age restriction on admission.
Example: Rated PG for some mild language and thematic elements.
The rating began in 1968 as "M" (mature audiences), was renamed "GP" in 1970 and became PG in 1972. The UK's BBFC also uses PG, with similar meaning. In basketball PG means point guard.
3. Papua New Guinea
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Papua New Guinea's two-letter code; the alpha-3 code is PNG, which is also the country's everyday abbreviation. Port Moresby is the capital, and the country has about 840 living languages.
Example: Mining royalties from PG fund much of the national budget.
PG also means parental guidance, the US film rating. The .pg domain uses second-level names such as .com.pg.
4. Page (pg.)
Writing & Everyday · Everyday Abbreviations
Informal abbreviation of "page," common in notes, texts, homework instructions and some printed guides, as in "see pg. 12." Formal citation styles use p. instead.
Example: For homework, read pg. 45 to 52 and answer questions 1 through 6.
APA, MLA and Chicago do not use pg.; they use p. and pp. The plural "pgs." is equally informal. In film, PG is a US rating meaning "parental guidance suggested," and in sports PG means point guard.
5. Postgraduate
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
British and Commonwealth shorthand for study after a first degree, such as master's degrees, diplomas and doctorates, and for the students undertaking it. American usage prefers "graduate" for the same level.
Example: PG students can book study rooms in the library through the graduate portal.
A "PGT" is a postgraduate taught program, while "PGR" is postgraduate research. In Indian medicine, "PG" refers specifically to residency-level specialization after the MBBS. In film, PG is a movie rating, an unrelated meaning.
