1. Released on own recognizance

Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations · also used in government

Pretrial release without bail, based on the defendant's written promise to appear at all future court dates. Judges grant ROR when they find the person is neither a flight risk nor a danger, typically for minor or first offenses or defendants with strong community ties.

Example: The judge granted ROR after noting the defendant had lived and worked in the county for 20 years.

Also called OR (own recognizance) release, or in Texas a personal recognizance (PR) bond. Missing court after ROR can lead to a bench warrant and a separate charge. Bail reforms, such as New York's 2019 law and Illinois's end of cash bail in 2023, expanded release without money bail for many offenses.

2. Ruby on Rails (RoR)

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A web application framework for the Ruby language that favors convention over configuration, generating much of a database-backed app's structure automatically. GitHub, Shopify and Basecamp were built with it.

Example: We need a RoR developer comfortable with ActiveRecord, Sidekiq and Hotwire.

Extracted by David Heinemeier Hansson from the Basecamp project and released in 2004. Its 2005 screencast of building a blog in fifteen minutes influenced later frameworks such as Django, Laravel and Phoenix. Usually called simply Rails, and built around MVC and the "don't repeat yourself" principle.
