Ro-Ro stands for Roll-on/roll-off, a maritime abbreviation.

Ship designed for wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks and trailers, that is driven on and off via ramps rather than lifted by crane. Ferries and pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) are Ro-Ro vessels.

Example: The Ro-Ro carrier unloaded 4,000 new cars at the port in a single day.

Usage notes

Ro-Ro ferries are vulnerable if water enters their open vehicle decks: the 1987 capsizing of Herald of Free Enterprise killed 193 people, and the 1994 sinking of the Estonia killed 852. Combination passenger ferries are called Ro-Pax. Fires in electric vehicles have become a concern on car carriers.
