CategoriesLaw & Legal

RLT stands for Revocable living trust, an estate and family law abbreviation.

Trust that a person creates and controls during life, usually acting as trustee, which holds title to assets and passes them to beneficiaries at death without probate. The creator can change or revoke it at any time.

Example: Because the house was retitled into their RLT, the children avoided probate entirely.

Usage notes

It gives no estate tax savings or creditor protection while the creator is alive, because the assets remain under the creator's control. It works only if funded by retitling assets; a pour-over will catches anything left out. It also lets a successor trustee manage assets if the creator becomes incapacitated. Often simply called a living trust.
