QPRT stands for Qualified personal residence trust, an estate and family law abbreviation.

Irrevocable trust into which a person transfers a home while keeping the right to live in it for a term of years, after which the home passes to beneficiaries. The taxable gift is reduced by the value of the retained right.

Example: They put the beach house in a 15-year QPRT and plan to pay their children rent afterward.

Usage notes

Pronounced "Q-pert". It rests on Treasury regulations under Internal Revenue Code § 2702. If the grantor dies during the term, the home is pulled back into the estate. Afterward, the grantor may stay only by paying fair-market rent, which moves still more value out of the estate. Higher interest rates make QPRTs more effective.
