TAPP stands for Transabdominal preperitoneal (hernia repair), a surgical abbreviation.

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in which the surgeon enters the abdominal cavity, opens the peritoneum over the groin, places mesh in the preperitoneal space and closes the peritoneal flap. It shows both groins and is easier to learn than TEP.

Example: TAPP repair of a right indirect inguinal hernia; small left hernia also repaired.

Usage notes

Open mesh repair, such as the Lichtenstein technique, remains common and can be done under local anesthesia. Robotic TAPP has grown rapidly in the US. International hernia society guidelines favor laparoscopic approaches for bilateral and recurrent hernias when expertise is available.
