RAPD stands for Relative afferent pupillary defect, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Sign of unequal input from the two optic nerves, detected with the swinging flashlight test: when light swings to the affected eye, both pupils paradoxically dilate. It indicates optic nerve disease or extensive retinal damage on that side.
Example: Swinging flashlight: 2+ RAPD OS; MRI orbits for suspected optic neuritis.
Usage notes
Also called a Marcus Gunn pupil. Common causes include optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, glaucoma with asymmetric damage and large retinal detachments. Cataracts and refractive errors do not cause an RAPD. It is graded by severity in some clinics.
