PDR stands for Proliferative diabetic retinopathy, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Advanced diabetic retinopathy in which oxygen-starved retina grows fragile new blood vessels that can bleed into the vitreous or pull the retina off, causing severe vision loss. Treatment is panretinal laser photocoagulation, anti-VEGF injections or vitrectomy.
Example: PDR OS with vitreous hemorrhage; PRP planned when view clears, anti-VEGF today.
Usage notes
The Diabetic Retinopathy Study, first reported in 1976, showed that panretinal photocoagulation more than halved the risk of severe vision loss. Later trials found anti-VEGF injections a reasonable alternative for patients who return reliably. Neovascular glaucoma is another complication. Good glucose and blood pressure control reduce progression.
