RADM stands for Rear Admiral (upper half), a US Navy and coast guard rank abbreviation.
Two-star flag officer rank of the Navy and Coast Guard, pay grade O-8, commanding major strike groups, naval regions, systems commands and large staffs. It is the highest permanent flag officer grade; three- and four-star ranks are tied to positions.
Example: RADM Okafor, commander of the strike group, met reporters aboard the flagship.
Usage notes
In the age of sail a fleet had three squadrons, and the rear admiral commanded the rear one while the vice admiral led the van. RADM is sometimes used loosely for both rear admiral grades, though Navy style reserves it for the upper half. Equal to an Army major general.
