PO2 stands for Petty Officer Second Class, a US Navy and coast guard rank abbreviation.

Pay grade E-5 for Navy and Coast Guard petty officers, shown by two chevrons beneath the eagle and rating badge. Second class petty officers supervise small work teams, qualify for more senior watch stations and often serve as work center supervisors.

Example: Congratulations to PO2 Ahmed, frocked today after the September advancement cycle.

Usage notes

Like other petty officer grades, it is usually written with the rating, as in IT2 or MA2. Navy advancement exams are given twice a year, and sailors who pass are ranked by a final multiple score combining the exam, evaluations, awards and time in rate. "Frocking" lets selectees wear the new rate before the pay raise takes effect.
