RaaS stands for Ransomware as a service, a cybersecurity abbreviation.
A criminal business model in which ransomware developers rent their malware and payment infrastructure to affiliates, who carry out attacks and share the ransom with the developers.
Example: The attack was traced to an affiliate of a RaaS operation that takes a 20 percent cut of every ransom.
Usage notes
RaaS groups such as REvil, Conti and LockBit dominated ransomware in the late 2010s and early 2020s, and the 2024 law-enforcement Operation Cronos disrupted LockBit's infrastructure. Many groups also steal data and threaten to publish it, a tactic called double extortion.
