OASDI stands for Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance, a public program abbreviation also used in business.
Official name of the Social Security program, which pays retirement, survivor and disability benefits funded by a 12.4 percent payroll tax split between employers and employees on wages up to an annual cap. Pay stubs often show the employee's 6.2 percent share as "OASDI".
Example: The OASDI line on my pay stub is the Social Security tax, separate from Medicare.
Usage notes
Disability insurance was added in 1956 to the original old-age and survivors program. The wage cap, $176,100 in 2025, rises each year with average wages. The 2025 Social Security trustees report projected that the combined trust funds would be depleted in 2034, after which incoming taxes would cover about 81 percent of scheduled benefits.
