PMDD stands for Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Severe form of premenstrual syndrome classified as a depressive disorder, with marked irritability, mood swings, depressed mood or anxiety in the week before menstruation that improve within days after it starts. Symptoms must be confirmed with daily ratings over at least two cycles.
Example: Prospective ratings over 2 cycles confirm PMDD; start fluoxetine during luteal phase.
Usage notes
PMDD was added to the main DSM-5 text in 2013 after appearing in an appendix of DSM-IV. It affects a small percentage of people who menstruate, far fewer than ordinary PMS. SSRIs work quickly in PMDD and can be taken only in the luteal phase. A drospirenone-containing oral contraceptive is also FDA-approved for it.
