PGx stands for Pharmacogenomics, a pharmacology abbreviation.
Study and clinical use of genetic variations that affect how individuals respond to drugs, such as variants in CYP2C19, CYP2D6, TPMT or HLA genes. Test results can guide drug choice and dose.
Example: PGx panel: CYP2C19 poor metabolizer; switch clopidogrel to ticagrelor.
Usage notes
The Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) publishes gene-drug guidelines. Screening for HLA-B*15:02 before carbamazepine is recommended for patients of Asian ancestry because of the risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and the FDA added a boxed warning to clopidogrel about CYP2C19 poor metabolizers in 2010.
