1. Officer in charge
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Officer placed in charge of a detachment, section, team or activity that is not a formal command, such as a range, an aviation detachment or a small office.
Example: The OIC of the range will conduct the safety briefing before the first relay fires.
Unlike a commanding officer, an OIC does not hold full command authority over personnel, such as the power to impose nonjudicial punishment, unless specifically granted. Navy small detachments, like helicopter detachments on destroyers, are often led by an OIC. The enlisted counterpart is the NCOIC.
2. Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations
Intergovernmental organization of 57 member states with large Muslim populations, which aims to protect the interests of the Muslim world and promote cooperation.
Example: The OIC held an emergency meeting on the attack on the mosque.
Founded in 1969 after an arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, it changed its name from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in 2011. It is the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the UN. In military and business use, OIC also means officer in charge.
3. Offer in compromise
Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations
Agreement in which the IRS accepts less than the full tax debt because the taxpayer cannot realistically pay in full, based on income, expenses and asset equity. Applications are made on Form 656 with a fee and an initial payment.
Example: The radio ads promise to settle debts for pennies on the dollar, but most OIC applications are rejected.
The IRS evaluates the taxpayer's "reasonable collection potential" and accepts only a minority of offers each year. Low-income applicants can have the fee and initial payment waived. The IRS's online Offer in Compromise Pre-Qualifier tool estimates eligibility before anyone pays to apply.
4. Oh, I see
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Acknowledges understanding, often after an explanation, as in "the bus was late" / "oic." Common in early instant messaging and still used occasionally.
Example: Oic, so the party is at Sam's house, not Jordan's.
An extended form of IC (I see). It can sound flat or unconvinced depending on context, so some writers add "ok" or "got it." Mostly used by millennials and older internet users today.
5. Opioid-induced constipation
Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations
Constipation caused by opioids slowing gut motility and fluid secretion, one of the most common opioid side effects. Unlike nausea or sedation, it does not improve with continued use.
Example: OIC despite scheduled senna: add PEG 3350 daily, consider a PAMORA.
Guidelines recommend starting a stimulant or osmotic laxative whenever opioids are prescribed long term. Stool softeners alone are usually ineffective. When standard laxatives fail, peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonists (PAMORAs) block opioid effects in the gut without reversing pain relief.
