PDE stands for Partial differential equation, a math abbreviation.

An equation involving partial derivatives of a function of several variables, such as position and time. The heat equation, wave equation, Schrödinger equation and Navier-Stokes equations are all PDEs.

Example: Heat flow in the rod is governed by the PDE u_t = k u_xx.

Usage notes

Whether smooth solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations always exist is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's Millennium Prize Problems, carrying a $1 million prize. PDEs are classified as elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic and are usually solved numerically with finite difference or finite element methods.
