CategoriesUnits & Measurements

ODE stands for Ordinary differential equation, a math abbreviation.

An equation relating a function of one variable to its derivatives, such as dy/dt = ky for exponential growth. ODEs model population growth, electrical circuits, orbits, chemical reactions and spring motion.

Example: Newton's second law for a mass on a spring gives the ODE m x'' + k x = 0.

Usage notes

"Ordinary" distinguishes them from partial differential equations, which involve several independent variables. Most ODEs cannot be solved in closed form, so they are solved numerically with methods such as Euler's method or Runge-Kutta. The order of an ODE is its highest derivative.
