MVT stands for Mean value theorem, a math abbreviation.
States that a function continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b) has at least one point where the instantaneous rate of change equals the average rate of change over the interval.
Example: If a car travels 120 miles in 2 hours, the MVT guarantees that at some moment its speed was exactly 60 mph.
Usage notes
Rolle's theorem is the special case where f(a) = f(b), giving a point with zero derivative. The MVT is used to prove that a function with zero derivative is constant and to bound errors in approximations. A separate mean value theorem for integrals guarantees that a function attains its average value.
