CategoriesBusiness & Finance

OKR stands for Objectives and key results, a management & strategy abbreviation.

Goal-setting framework in which each objective, a qualitative statement of what to achieve, is paired with three to five measurable key results that show whether it was reached. OKRs are typically set quarterly and published openly across the organization so that teams can align their goals.

Example: Engineering's Q3 OKR: make checkout faster, with key results of p95 latency under 300 ms and cart abandonment down 10 percent.

Usage notes

Andy Grove developed the method at Intel in the 1970s, and John Doerr, who learned it there, introduced it to Google in 1999; his 2018 book Measure What Matters popularized it further. Many practitioners treat OKRs as stretch goals, so scoring around 0.7 on a 0-to-1 scale is considered a success. OKRs focus on change and ambition, whereas KPIs monitor ongoing performance.
