OAU stands for Organisation of African Unity, an international organization abbreviation.
Former association of independent African states founded in 1963 in Addis Ababa to promote unity, end colonial rule and oppose apartheid. It was replaced by the African Union in 2002.
Example: The OAU's liberation committee supported independence movements in southern Africa.
Usage notes
Thirty-two states signed its charter on May 25, 1963, a date still celebrated as Africa Day. Its principle of non-interference in members' internal affairs was criticized for leaving it unable to respond to atrocities, a reason for creating the AU. Morocco left in 1984 over Western Sahara and rejoined the AU in 2017.
