OGT stands for Orogastric tube, a nursing abbreviation.
Gastric tube inserted through the mouth rather than the nose, typical in intubated patients, premature infants and patients with facial fractures or suspected base-of-skull fracture, where a nasal tube could enter the cranium.
Example: OGT placed post-intubation, 58 cm at lip, placement confirmed by CXR.
Usage notes
Depth is recorded at the lips or teeth instead of the nostril. Newborns are preferential nose breathers, so mouth placement keeps their nasal airway clear. An OGT is usually changed to a nasal or surgical feeding tube once the patient is extubated if longer-term feeding is needed.
