CategoriesTechnology & Computing

OFDM stands for Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, a telecom abbreviation.

Modulation method that splits a radio channel into many closely spaced subcarriers carrying data in parallel, which resists interference and signal reflections. It underlies Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G, DSL, digital TV and DAB radio.

Example: Because OFDM copes well with reflections, digital TV reception stays stable in the city.

Usage notes

The concept dates to the 1960s, but cheap digital signal processing made it practical in the 1990s. OFDMA, its multi-user version, assigns groups of subcarriers to different users and is a key feature of LTE and Wi-Fi 6. DSL uses a related technique called discrete multitone (DMT).
