NVG stands for Night vision goggles, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.

Devices that amplify faint light or detect heat to let troops see in darkness, worn on helmets or held in front of the eyes. They allow US forces to fight effectively at night.

Example: Pilots flew the entire approach on NVGs with all exterior lights off.

Usage notes

Image-intensifying devices such as the AN/PVS-14 monocular and the PVS-31 binocular are standard, and troops call them "NODs" (night observation devices). Thermal imagers detect heat rather than light. Night vision is a key reason US forces have long said they "own the night."
