Long-standing abbreviation of Newfoundland, used for the island and, before 2001, for the whole province. It appears in historical records, older Canadian Press copy and the names of institutions founded before the name change.

Usage notes

Since the province became Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001, Canadian Press uses N.L., and the postal symbol changed from NF to NL. Newfoundlanders pronounce the name to rhyme with understand.
