1. Nondisclosure agreement

Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations

Contract in which one or both parties agree to keep specified information confidential and use it only for a stated purpose, such as evaluating a deal, a job or a partnership. Typical terms define confidential information, list exclusions, set a duration and provide remedies such as injunctions for breach.

Example: Before the demo, the startup asked the investor to sign an NDA covering its source code and pricing.

Also called a confidentiality agreement (CA) or confidential disclosure agreement (CDA). A one-way NDA protects only the discloser, while a mutual NDA (MNDA) protects both sides. Confidentiality periods commonly run two to five years, with trade secrets protected for as long as they remain secret. The federal Speak Out Act of 2022 makes pre-dispute NDAs unenforceable against sexual harassment and assault claims.

2. National Democratic Alliance

Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations

Coalition of Indian political parties led by the BJP, which has governed India since 2014. After the 2024 election, when the BJP fell short of a majority on its own, allied parties became essential to the government's majority.

Example: NDA partners met in Delhi to agree on the coalition's legislative agenda.

The alliance was formed in 1998 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Its main rival is the opposition INDIA bloc led by the Indian National Congress. In business, NDA usually means non-disclosure agreement.

3. New Drug Application

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Formal submission a company makes to the FDA to request approval to market a new drug in the US, containing the full results of animal and human studies, manufacturing details and proposed labeling.

Example: The sponsor filed its NDA in March; the PDUFA date falls in January.

Under PDUFA user-fee goals, the FDA aims to act on standard NDAs for new molecular entities within about 10 months of the 60-day filing date and on priority NDAs within about 6 months. A 505(b)(2) NDA relies partly on published data or an existing approval. In business, NDA far more often means non-disclosure agreement.
