1. Nerve conduction study
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Test that stimulates peripheral nerves with small electrical pulses through surface electrodes and records the response, measuring how fast and how strongly signals travel. It diagnoses carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome and nerve injuries.
Example: NCS: prolonged median distal motor latency at the wrist, consistent with moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.
Reduced amplitudes suggest axonal damage, while slowed velocities, prolonged latencies and conduction block suggest demyelination, a distinction central to diagnosing neuropathies. Cold limbs falsely slow conduction, so skin temperature is controlled. In nursing diet orders NCS means no concentrated sweets.
2. No concentrated sweets
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Older diet order for people with diabetes that removes foods high in simple sugar, such as desserts, regular soft drinks and candy, without counting carbohydrate. It persists in some long-term care settings.
Example: Resident on NCS diet; family asked not to bring candy.
Most diabetes organizations now favor consistent-carbohydrate meal plans, which spread a set amount of carbohydrate across meals, over simple sweet restriction. In long-term care, liberalized diets are often preferred to maintain weight and quality of life in frail older adults.
