NC-17 stands for No One 17 and Under Admitted, a film, television and theater abbreviation.
MPA film rating meaning nobody 17 or younger may be admitted. It is reserved for films with adult content that most parents would consider too much for teenagers.
Example: Rated NC-17 for explicit content; the studio chose to release it unrated instead.
Usage notes
Created in September 1990 to replace the X rating; Henry & June (1990) was the first NC-17 film. Many theaters and advertisers refuse NC-17 films, so studios usually cut films to get an R. Showgirls (1995) was the widest NC-17 release.
