N/S stands for Nonsmoker or no smoking, a classified ad abbreviation.
Indicates in rental, roommate and personal ads that the advertiser is a nonsmoker or that smoking is not allowed, as in "N/S only."
Example: Seeking quiet, N/S roommate to share a 2BR near campus starting in August.
Usage notes
Smoke-free policies are common in apartments, and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development has required smoke-free public housing since 2018. Variants include NS and "no smoking." In roommate ads the term may or may not cover vaping and cannabis, so it is worth asking.
