MSDS stands for Material safety data sheet, a chemistry abbreviation.

Older name and format for the document describing a chemical product's hazards, safe handling and emergency measures. Before harmonization, MSDS layouts varied by supplier and country; most jurisdictions have now replaced them with the 16-section safety data sheet (SDS) of the GHS.

Example: The binder of old MSDS printouts in the shop was replaced with current SDS sheets.

Usage notes

In the United States, OSHA's 2012 revision of the Hazard Communication Standard required the switch from MSDS to SDS, with full compliance by June 2015. Many people and websites still say MSDS out of habit, and search engines treat the terms as interchangeable. Canada also used the term MSDS under its original WHMIS rules.
