MMSI stands for Maritime Mobile Service Identity, a maritime abbreviation.
Nine-digit number that identifies a ship or coast station on digital selective calling radios, AIS and satellite systems. The first three digits indicate the country, such as 366 to 369 or 338 for the United States.
Example: Program your boat's MMSI into the VHF so a distress call sends your identity and position.
Usage notes
Recreational boaters in the US can obtain an MMSI through organizations such as BoatUS for domestic use. An MMSI is different from a ship's IMO number, which never changes. Search and rescue centers use the MMSI to look up vessel details during an emergency.
