MARPOL stands for International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, a maritime abbreviation.

IMO treaty that limits pollution from ships by oil, chemicals, sewage, garbage and air emissions, set out in six annexes. The name combines "marine pollution."

Example: Under MARPOL Annex V, dumping plastic garbage at sea is prohibited worldwide.

Usage notes

Adopted in 1973 and modified by a 1978 protocol, so it is often cited as MARPOL 73/78. Annex VI on air pollution brought the "IMO 2020" rule, cutting the sulfur limit in ship fuel to 0.50 percent from 3.50 percent. Special areas such as the Baltic and Mediterranean have stricter rules.
