ISM stands for International Safety Management Code, a maritime abbreviation.
IMO code requiring shipping companies to run documented safety management systems covering operations, maintenance, emergency preparedness and reporting. Ships and companies must hold ISM certificates.
Example: The audit found that the ship's ISM procedures for engine room fire drills were not being followed.
Usage notes
Made mandatory under SOLAS from 1998. The code grew out of the 1987 Herald of Free Enterprise disaster, which exposed management failures. Each company must appoint a "designated person ashore" with direct access to top management.
