Usage notes
Founded in 1953, it became powerful after economist Marvin Miller was hired as executive director in 1966. Arbitrator Peter Seitz's 1975 decision in the Messersmith-McNally case ended the reserve clause and opened free agency. Work stoppages include the 1994-95 strike that canceled the World Series and the 2021-22 lockout.
