MKV stands for Matroska Video, a file format abbreviation.
Open, royalty-free multimedia container that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio and subtitle tracks, chapters and attachments in one file. It is popular for high-quality movie rips and archiving.
Example: The MKV includes the English and Japanese audio tracks plus three subtitle options.
Usage notes
Matroska launched in 2002, its name inspired by Russian matryoshka nesting dolls. Related extensions are .mka for audio and .mks for subtitles. Google's WebM format is based on a subset of Matroska. Windows 10 added native MKV playback in 2015, and VLC, mpv and Plex play it widely, but some smart TVs and Apple apps still struggle with it.
