MEU stands for Marine Expeditionary Unit, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Smallest standing Marine Air-Ground Task Force, about 2,200 Marines and sailors embarked on an amphibious ready group of three Navy ships and commanded by a colonel. A MEU combines an infantry battalion, an aviation squadron and a logistics battalion.
Example: The 26th MEU evacuated civilians from the embassy using MV-22 Ospreys.
Usage notes
There are seven MEUs: the 11th, 13th and 15th on the West Coast, the 22nd, 24th and 26th on the East Coast and the 31st in Okinawa. MEUs train to be special operations capable, and older documents write MEU(SOC). Pronounced "mew."
