M+S stands for Mud and snow, an automotive abbreviation.

Sidewall marking on all-season and some off-road tires indicating a tread pattern designed for mud and light snow. The rating is based on tread geometry, not on a snow traction test.

Example: The M+S marking on all-season tires doesn't make them true winter tires.

Usage notes

Also written M/S or MS. Because no performance test is required, many authorities and tire testers recommend tires with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol for serious winter driving. Some mountain pass chain laws accept M+S tires as minimum equipment.
