LSIL stands for Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Pap result indicating mild cell changes, usually caused by a transient HPV infection that clears on its own, especially in young women. Most LSIL findings do not progress to cancer.
Example: Pap LSIL at age 24; colposcopy per ASCCP guidelines, biopsy CIN 1, repeat testing in 1 year.
Usage notes
LSIL on cytology usually corresponds to CIN 1 on biopsy. Management follows risk-based ASCCP guidelines and often involves colposcopy or repeat testing rather than treatment. In patients under 25, more conservative follow-up is recommended. Pronounced as letters or "EL-sil".
