IUPC stands for Intrauterine pressure catheter, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Thin catheter placed through the cervix into the uterus after the membranes have ruptured to measure the actual strength of contractions in mmHg. It also allows amnioinfusion, infusing fluid into the uterus to relieve cord compression.
Example: IUPC placed: contractions every 2–3 minutes, 220 Montevideo units; labor adequate.
Usage notes
Contraction adequacy is calculated in Montevideo units, the sum of peak pressures above baseline over 10 minutes, with 200 or more considered adequate. IUPCs help decide whether a stalled labor needs more oxytocin or a cesarean. Rare complications include placental or uterine injury.
