CategoriesMedical

LSB stands for Long spine board, an emergency medicine abbreviation.

Rigid board used to extricate and move trauma patients, formerly applied routinely to immobilize the spine during transport. It remains a tool for moving patients out of vehicles or difficult locations.

Example: Extricated on LSB, transferred to stretcher, board removed.

Usage notes

Evidence that routine backboarding prevents spinal injury is weak, so most systems now use it mainly for extrication. Prolonged time on a board causes pain and pressure injuries. In cardiology LSB means left sternal border, a location for listening to heart sounds.
