1. Level of evidence

Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations

Ranking of the strength of research supporting a statement, typically from systematic reviews and randomized trials at the top to expert opinion at the bottom. Guidelines and journals label recommendations with levels such as 1A, B-R or C-LD.

Example: Class I recommendation, LOE A, supported by multiple RCTs.

Systems vary: the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine publishes widely used levels, and the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association pair a class of recommendation with a level of evidence. Orthopedic and surgical journals often require authors to state the level of their study. GRADE has replaced simple hierarchies in many guidelines.

2. Level of effort

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Estimate of the work needed for a task, often in hours or days; in earned value management, the term also names support activities, such as project administration, that are measured by elapsed time rather than discrete deliverables.

Example: What's the LOE for adding single sign-on?

In EVM, level-of-effort work earns value automatically as time passes, so too much of it can hide performance problems. Teams often give quick T-shirt sizes (S, M, L) as rough LOE estimates.
