LLQ stands for Left lower quadrant, an anatomy abbreviation.
Lower left region of the abdomen containing the descending and sigmoid colon, left ovary and fallopian tube and the left ureter. In adults, LLQ pain with fever and tenderness most commonly points to sigmoid diverticulitis.
Example: LLQ pain, fever and leukocytosis in a 62-year-old; CT confirms uncomplicated diverticulitis.
Usage notes
Diverticulitis is sometimes nicknamed "left-sided appendicitis" because the presentation is similar. Sigmoid volvulus, colon cancer, kidney stones and gynecologic conditions also cause LLQ pain. Findings are always combined with imaging and labs, since visceral pain localizes imperfectly.
