LLLT stands for Limited license legal technician, a legal profession abbreviation.
Nonlawyer professional licensed by the Washington Supreme Court to give limited legal advice and help clients prepare documents in specific practice areas, initially family law, without a lawyer's supervision. It was the first program of its kind in the United States.
Example: The LLLT helped her complete the parenting plan forms but could not argue the case in court.
Usage notes
Washington approved the program in 2012 and licensed the first technicians in 2015. In 2020 the court voted to sunset it, allowing existing LLLTs to keep practicing. Arizona, Utah, Oregon and other states have since created legal paraprofessional licenses to widen access to justice.
