Common abbreviation for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, founded by Joseph Smith in New York in 1830 and headquartered in Salt Lake City. The church reports more than 17 million members worldwide.
Example: The family moved to Utah to be near LDS relatives.
In 2018 church president Russell M. Nelson asked the media and members to use the church's full name and to avoid "Mormon" and "LDS" as shorthand. The AP Stylebook now prefers "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" on first reference and "the church" afterward. Other groups descended from Joseph Smith's movement include the Community of Christ.
2. Liquidated damages (LDs)

Fixed sum, stated in the contract, that a party must pay for a specified breach, most often a daily amount for late completion of a construction project. Agreeing the figure in advance spares the injured party from proving its actual losses.
Example: The contract imposes LDs of $5,000 per calendar day after the substantial completion date.
US courts enforce liquidated damages only if actual damages were hard to estimate when contracting and the amount was a reasonable forecast; otherwise the clause is an unenforceable penalty. The UK Supreme Court in Cavendish Square v Makdessi (2015) asked instead whether the clause protects a legitimate interest proportionately. Contracts commonly cap total LDs.
