CLABSI stands for Central line-associated bloodstream infection, a hospital abbreviation.
Bloodstream infection in a patient with a central line that was in place for more than two days, not explained by an infection elsewhere. It is a major tracked hospital quality measure.
Example: Unit CLABSI rate zero for 12 months after maintenance bundle rollout.
Usage notes
Pronounced "clab-see". Insertion and maintenance bundles, including chlorhexidine bathing and daily review of line need, have sharply cut rates since the 2000s. Results are publicly reported, and preventing these infections is a priority in the HAC Reduction Program.
