LARP stands for Live-action role-playing, a fandom and fan fiction abbreviation.
Form of role-playing in which participants physically act out their characters in costume, often with foam weapons, at events lasting hours or whole weekends. Also used as slang for pretending to be something one is not.
Example: Our LARP group meets in the state park every other Saturday, foam swords provided.
Usage notes
Live-action role-playing grew from tabletop gaming and historical reenactment in the 1970s and 1980s, with large events held in Scandinavia, the UK and the US. Online, "larping" mocks people pretending to an identity or expertise, as in "he's larping as a tech CEO." Pronounced as a word, "larp."
